I think what I’ve come to realize is that I really am just tired of all these game comparisons. I mean, yea it’s fun to argue which game is better than which game, but at the end of the day, each game/franchise has its own separate merits and flaws and to compare different games seem to result in needless arguments and false claims of how this game is a ripoff of that game and vice versa. Games are meant to be enjoyed but I have noticed that whenever the holiday season comes about, names of games are mentioned to establish a set of preferences as forms of truth. I at one time enjoyed doing this as well but slowly I’ve come to the point where I just don’t like it.
I think I came to this realization quickly after I started thinking about AAA games. Some of you who are my loyal subscribers may remember the blogs I made about these games that were considered AAA by Metacritic but which I absolutely didn’t enjoy playing at all. The message of those blogs was simply that everyone has different tastes and preferences and that there is no such thing as a game that is enjoyable for everyone. This conclusion has thus made me think about other things as well, and one of the thing I thought about was GOTY awards and how unnecessary and pointless it actually was.
I guess it’s a great feeling to see the game that you really enjoyed this year win the award and it’s also fun to talk about and compare all the great games that came out for the year and that’s all good and all, but the problem is that the process is extremely messy. The end result is never something everyone can agree with (or sometimes, something that majority can’t agree with) and since there’s no democratic way to go about it, everything feels way too arbitrary and biased. People don’t like bias with these things but the thing is, something like GOTY can’t be anything but biased. Everyone has different tastes. If you’re a sports gamer and the game you had most fun with this year was NHL 09, then it just won’t seem fair that Gears of War 2 got the award. If you thought Gears of War 2 was the best game you’ve ever played and LittleBigPlanet got the award, that won’t good at all either. And so on and so forth. This is an arena that’s much too subjective to have a contest like this.
